Correspondence Bias
You never know what battles people are fighting. So be nice to others.
You are on floor 18 of your high-rise office building. You look out the window and see a guy punching the air frantically. You think to yourself, “wow people be cray.” You get back on task with the attitude of “im so glad im a sane normal person who doesn't fight invisible people on street corners in public”
We all do this. Snap judgement. We can dictate a persons whole life status in a single glance.
At your point of view, the guy punching the air frantically looks like he’s outta his mind, but is he? Little did we know that 4 seconds before we glanced out the window, he walked through a swarm of bees and he was hospitalized as a kid be cause he is highly allergic to bee stings. Our snap judgement wouldnt be able to pick this up because we dont know the full story. Whats even worse, is that we dont care about the full story.
When someone cuts you off on the freeway and speeds past everyone, we call them a jerk. We place judgement on their character, not their immediate situation. The guy is speeding because his wife is pregnant with his first son of 3 kids.
We judge ourselves from our immediate situation and not our character. If im late to the event, i blame it on traffic or xyz. What should be to blame is myself not preparing better to arrive either early or on time to the event.
Let’s get 1% better everyday
